MMP Capital, a Farmingdale, New York lessor that calls itself independent, has closed a $20.0 million corporate note rated investment grade, it said on October 30. The company labels the deal BBB. Most of the money is meant to fund fresh originations as MMP grows.
The deal
Founder and CEO John-Paul Smolenski described it as MMP’s debut in corporate notes and a significant step for the business. In his words, the money will help a book that has been growing fast, and access to flexible funding is central to how MMP plans its finances. Brean Capital, LLC acted as MMP’s only placement agent as well as its exclusive financial advisor on the transaction.
MMP says the closing was recent but gives no closing date; the announcement is dated October 30. It omits the coupon, the maturity, the type of investor and the name of the agency that assigned the BBB grade.
The business
Most of what MMP writes is secured by equipment in three niches: medical aesthetics, dental practices and clinical healthcare. It began operating in 2013 and calls itself a hybrid lender, meaning it can hold deals directly or pass them to a syndication outlet. Customers in the U.S. can get equipment financing, leases and unsecured capital.
MMP credits its narrow industry focus, its borrower profile and its experienced operators for putting it on a path to become a leading independent lender in equipment finance. That is the company’s own claim.
What to watch
For funders and brokers, the note shows one way a niche lessor can raise money to grow its originations. Since this is MMP’s first issue, there is no earlier note to compare against for size or pricing, and the release supplies neither. Open questions include how the proceeds will be split between deals MMP holds and deals it syndicates, and whether a rated note changes terms offered to vendors or brokers.
